Cigano's abbreviated log & travels - 2010

2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011

April 2010
First trip north for spring maintenance Apr 23. Much to do, but very little time this spring due to our other life. Keel repair will be deferred to marina staff. Cover needs a small repair. Battery condition and charging system evaluations will be necessary before any trips can be planned.

May 2010
Our friend Dennis is preparing to depart our marina shortly aboard his Shannon 38 for Antarctica then around the world or whereever the winds take him.
-Cover off and bottom touch-up done. Bilge blower wiring needs replacement. Spring commissioning. Keel repair completed. Splash 28th. Dennis departed Corny on the 30th via the Great Lakes and Azores to Antarctica. We wish him a safe and wonderful adventure.

June 2010
We finally made it away from the dock for a short motor-cruise. All systems working fine except alternator is acting fickle and questionable again. Lots of time in port due to marginal weather and because we have been very busy with our other life.

July 2010
Craig and Sue on Stolen Moments stopped in during a break from their Atlantic retirement cruise. Finally, we got the sails up for a nice mid-July shakedown day-sail. Alternator now appears to be working fine. We are now faced with finding an intermittent and illusive electro-mechanical problem. We stopped to visit Alex and Beth, camping in Bark Bay. We spent a night hosting Janet's sister, Lorraine, anchored at Raspberry Island.

August 2010
We sailed, motored, and motorsailed in about equal parts to and from Isle Royale for a week-long trip that was more about relaxing than exploring new territory. While there we met some wonderful folks on other boats, picked blueberries, watched moose, swam in the unusually warm water, watched storms miss us - and hit us. We explored the perimeter of Wright Island via the dinghy as well as other stops. The outboard performed flawlessly - thanks to my brother Dan for the fuel system tuneup. We wish this would have been the year we chose to sail to the Canadian north shore because it was a great deal warmer than the temps we experienced on last year's voyage. George, the monitor wind vane needs some attention and so does our brightwork. Just got word that Dennis O has left the North American/Newfoundland coast headed for the Azores.
My friends Ron and Jack joined me for a few days for a Sail to the islands. Had a great time. Then Ron stuck around for an extra five days to help with varnish removal and replacement. Many thanks Ron.

September 2010
Still varnishing . . . six coats on the bow platform, five coats other places - starting to look good. Still need more, more, and more coats and more stripping. Dennis got halfway across Atlantic, then returned to Newfoundland due to mechanical problems - will retry next year. Glad to know he's okay. Temps starting to cool and feel like fall. Put a ding in the new caprail varnish getting ready for haulout - oh well, it's a boat, not a piece of furniture. I am planning to fill a dozen empty nail polish bottles with varnish and do weekly or even daily touch-ups as needed to preserve this finish.

October 2010
Cigano is high and dry, cover is on (after some minor sewing repairs) and winter camp is set up. Early next spring will bring some varnish work under the cover - rain or shine, and George's parts replacements. We are seeing many benefits of acquiring this cover.
